The Department of Accounting at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) held a strategic meeting with the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), on Friday, 21 November 2025, at the Accountancy House. The engagement formed part of ongoing efforts to deepen the long-standing partnership between the two institutions.
The meeting brought together senior faculty members of the Department and officials of ICAG, including the President, Mr Augustine Addo; Prof Francis Aboagye-Otchere; Prof Godfred M. Y. Owusu; Dr Rita Amoah Bekoe; Dr Emmanuel Tetteh Asare; Dr Richard Fosu Amankwah; Dr Edward Nartey; Dr Nicholas Asare; Dr Cletus Agyenim-Boateng; Mr Kwame Ampim-Darko, Director, QAM; Mr Osei Adjaye-Gyamfi, Director, Technical and Research; Ms Joyce Adu, Director, Legal and Corporate Affairs; Mr Isaac Addo, ASA President; and Ms Nana Frema Anokye Lucia, ASA Secretary.

In his welcome remarks, Mr Addo expressed appreciation for the renewed engagement, noting that ICAG had long anticipated the opportunity to re-establish formal interactions with the Department following the transition of the former Accountancy Chair. He reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to advancing this collaboration.
Head of Department, Prof Godfred M. Y. Owusu, highlighted that the visit aims to revitalise existing initiatives, particularly those linked to research, professional training, and curriculum enhancement. He emphasised the shared responsibility of both institutions in strengthening accounting education and professional readiness in Ghana.
Discussions centred on several avenues for deepening collaboration. The Department proposed the establishment of enhanced internship pathways to support practical learning, a redesigned seminar series incorporating practitioner-led engagements, the creation of an Audit Chamber, and the development of a modern accounting laboratory to reinforce hands-on training. Both parties also expressed strong interest in pursuing joint research projects.
Prof Owusu raised concerns regarding delays in the approval of exemptions, especially those relating to the Public Sector course. ICAG representatives explained that the matter is connected to national policy processes but assured the Department that ongoing discussions aim to address the issue. They added that forthcoming exemption arrangements would adopt a university-specific rather than a uniform national approach.
ICAG further encouraged greater academic involvement in its assessment processes, inviting faculty members to serve as examiners, contribute to question-setting, and participate in marking. Addressing concerns about the Institute’s limited presence on campus, participants discussed possibilities such as establishing an information desk and exploring the creation of an ICAG lounge within the new UGBS graduate building.
Looking ahead, ICAG announced plans to introduce a practical sustainability project and expressed interest in collaborating with relevant UGBS experts.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to accelerate planned initiatives and to continue building a robust partnership that advances accounting training, research, and professional excellence in Ghana.
