Durham University Engages UGBS Students on Postgraduate Study Opportunities

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), in collaboration with Durham University, hosted an engaging session on 22nd October 2025 at the R. S. Amegashie Auditorium. The event was coordinated by the UGBS International Relations Office, led by Prof. Elikplimi K. Agbloyor and sought to provide students with insights into postgraduate study opportunities and academic life at Durham University. In his welcome address, Prof. Agbloyor encouraged students to take advantage of international education to broaden their perspectives and return home to contribute to national development.

The session began with a presentation by Dr. Precious A. Brenni, a lecturer in Finance at Durham University, who gave an overview of the institution. He mentioned that Durham University was founded in 1832, and it is the third-oldest university in England and a member of the prestigious Russell Group. Dr. Brenni highlighted that the University has a student population of about 23,000, with approximately 32% being international students. He further elaborated on the University’s facilities, postgraduate programmes, and the structure of its master’s courses. 

Dr. Liadi Mudashiru of Durham University, who moderated the session, spoke about the University’s global rankings, career and employability opportunities, collegiate experiences, and student life, including clubs and societies. He also discussed available scholarship options and guided students through aspects of the academic journey at Durham.

Representatives from IDP Education, Globe Education Centre, and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at the British Council were also present. They outlined the support available to prospective students, including free assistance with programme applications, visa processing, and accommodation arrangements. The Globe Education Centre noted that it is an accredited agency for Durham University, while the IELTS representatives educated participants on the various test types, delivery modes, and the recently introduced “One Skill Retake” option. 

Durham University alumni from Ghana were also invited to share their academic and social experiences. They explained how studying at Durham had shaped their professional paths and personal growth. Their testimonies were meant to encourage students to consider Durham as a destination for postgraduate education. 

Dr. Anthony Kyiu, a lecturer in Finance at Durham University, also addressed participants on the structure of Durham’s master’s curriculum and career prospects. He mentioned the tools and approaches used to enhance learning, such as seminars, workshops, virtual learning platforms, and regular staff consultations. Dr. Chew further explained the professional recognitions and affiliations of the programmes, noting that most Durham master’s graduates secure employment within three months of completing their studies. 

The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer segment, allowing students to seek clarification on admissions processes, eligibility requirements, and life as an international student at Durham University.
