FINSA Organises an Investment Seminar to Spark Financial Literacy Among Students

The Finance Students and Associates (FINSA), in collaboration with the Office of the UGSRC Treasurer, hosted an Investment Seminar on 11th June 2025 at the R.S. Amegashie Auditorium under the theme “The Student Investor.” The seminar was inspired and spearheaded by H.E. Priscillia Dele Ogor, President of FINSA for the 2024/2025 academic year, with the goal of helping students make smart financial decisions early in life through practical insights from high-profile resource persons.

Joshua Afari, Vice President of FINSA, gave a warm welcome to attendees and shared the purpose of the gathering. Prof. Justice Bawole, Former Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, followed with his remarks, encouraging students to take financial literacy seriously and begin building their financial futures now. He also commended Ms. Ogor for her initiative in putting together such a timely and impactful program and praised her for its successful execution.

Action Talks and Financial Wisdom

The first major presentation was led by Ms. Grace Quaye, CMO of Ashfield Investment Managers, who spoke on “Investment Opportunities That Lie in the Market for Students.” She broke down simple ways students can start investing with little capital and shared real-life examples.

Next, Mr. Nii Amu Otoo, Standard and Enforcement Manager at the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), helped students understand the value of pensions, even for young people, and debunked the notion that pension planning is only for the elderly.

Another investment talk came from Mr. Nene Lomo Nartey, MD of EDC Stockbrokers Ltd, who expanded on smart investment habits students can build today to secure their future wealth.

When it was time to discuss insurance, Mr. Mohammed Hafiz Issahaku, Head of Core Supervision at the National Insurance Commission (NIC), stepped in for Ms. Stella Jonah, Head of Supervision. He spoke about the misconceptions surrounding insurance and why students should start viewing it as a necessary safety net for unexpected events.

Panel Discussion & Participant Engagement

A Q&A panel session moderated by Ms. Ogor gave students the chance to ask pressing questions directly to representatives from NPRA, NIC, and EDC Stockbrokers Ltd. The session was one of the highlights of the day, with students expressing concerns and receiving thoughtful answers.

In an exclusive interview, Sydney Codjoe, a student at the University of Ghana Business School, shared a practical lesson he took from the seminar:

“The 50-30-20 formula really stood out to me. It’s a simple way to manage income; spending 50% on needs, 30% on wants, and saving 20%. I also liked the idea of using envelopes to separate money based on purpose.”

Outside the auditorium, EDC Stockbrokers Ltd and Ashfield Investment had set up stands to help students take immediate action by opening investment accounts, marking the start of their financial journeys.

Conclusion

The event not only imparted knowledge, but it also featured fun and interactive sessions, with some lucky students walking away with souvenirs and gift surprises. A spoken word interlude added to the dynamic experience of the Investment Seminar.

The event ended with a vote of thanks from Roland Oppong, UGSRC Treasurer, and a closing prayer. Throughout the program, MC John David Afeti kept the atmosphere engaging and organised.

The Investment Seminar wasn’t just an academic event; it was a call to action for students to take charge of their finances. By focusing on financial literacy, pensions, insurance, and ethical investments, the program empowered students to become informed, responsible investors, starting now!
