UGBS Insurance Students Embark on Educational Visit to KEK Insurance Brokers Ltd
The Insurance Students Association of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) embarked on an educational visit to KEK Insurance Brokers Ltd on Thursday, 11th July 2025, as part of efforts to expose students to the practical aspects of the insurance industry. The engagement began with a presentation on the history and operations of KEK Insurance Brokers, one of Ghana’s leading insurance brokerage firms with over 35 years of experience. Students were taken through the company’s founding, milestones, achievements, and the numerous awards and recognitions it has received over the years.
Ms. Deborah Tenu, a recent UGBS graduate and National Service Personnel at KEK, shared her experience working with the company. She recounted the new perspectives she had gained since joining and engaged the students in a discussion on workplace expectations at KEK. Mr. Foster Mireku, Business Development Manager, delivered the welcome address on behalf of the General Manager. He introduced KEK as a brokerage firm that has supported individuals and organisations for over three decades. He encouraged the students to interact freely with staff members to gain deeper insights and build professional connections.
Ms. Akosua Frimpong, Technical Manager at KEK, also delivered an in-depth session on the fundamentals of insurance broking. Her presentation covered the difference between brokers and agents, the broking process, the regulatory environment, and KEK’s journey as a company. She explained that brokers act as intermediaries between clients and insurance companies and often work with multiple insurers, unlike agents who typically represent only one. She further addressed issues such as compliance, data protection, licensing, and the various career opportunities available in a broking firm.
The session continued with a discussion on reinsurance, led by Mr. Williams Ampofo and Mr. Joseph Adante, both Reinsurance Managers. They explained that reinsurance is a mechanism by which insurers transfer a portion of their risks to other insurers (reinsurers) in exchange for a share of the premium. The discussion also introduced the two main types of reinsurance, facultative and treaty, and covered their financial implications, associated career paths, and required skills. The speakers urged students to explore these opportunities as they consider their future careers.
Mr. Elijah Owusu, Head of Financial Institutions at KEK, concluded the presentations by elaborating on the range of career options within the insurance industry. He encouraged students to explore specialised professional tracks such as data analysis, reinsurance brokerage, underwriting, actuarial science, marketing and sales, insurance law, regulation, and more. He also advised students to consider obtaining relevant professional certifications to boost their employability.
The educational visit ended with a guided tour of the KEK offices, where students received detailed insights into the roles and operations of the various departments within the organisation. This annual visit offers a valuable opportunity for UGBS insurance students to gain practical knowledge and expand their understanding of the insurance profession.
