UGBS MPhil Public Administration Student Presents Research at International Sustainability Conference in Rome

Ms. Mercy Larbi, an MPhil Public Administration student at the University of Ghana Business School has presented her research on institutional compliance with Ghana’s electronic waste (e-waste) regulations at the International Sustainability Conference, held in Rome, Italy, from 12th to 15th October 2026. The conference, organised by Villanova University at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum, brought together scholars, practitioners and sustainability advocates from different parts of the world to exchange ideas and explore solutions to pressing environmental and sustainable development challenges.

Ms. Larbi presented her research abstract titled “Assessing Institutional Compliance with Ghana’s E-Waste Regulations: A Qualitative Study of Universities in the Greater Accra Region.” The presentation highlighted the importance of examining how institutions comply with environmental regulations and contribute to responsible e-waste management. It also provided an opportunity to share research from Ghana with an international audience and engage with scholars working on sustainability-related issues. The four-day conference featured keynote addresses, plenary discussions, panel sessions, lightning talks and poster presentations covering environmental justice, sustainability and philanthropy, artificial intelligence, housing, sustainable partnerships and social justice.

Among the keynote speakers was Dr. Robert D. Bullard, widely recognised as the Father of Environmental Justice, whose address emphasised the importance of translating sustainability discussions into meaningful action. Other speakers included Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, and Wanjira Mathai, who contributed perspectives on sustainability and the need for collective action to address global environmental challenges. A visit to Borgo Laudato Si’ was another notable feature of the programme, offering participants an opportunity to reflect on environmental stewardship and the importance of caring for the planet. Discussions on sustainability and philanthropy also provided insights into funding priorities and collaborative approaches for advancing sustainable development.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Larbi highlighted the importance of moving beyond discussions to practical action, advocacy and effective governance in advancing environmental justice and sustainability. She explained that the conference also reinforced the need for stronger partnerships, continuous learning and the exchange of knowledge to translate research and policy commitments into tangible outcomes. The participation of Ms. Larbi demonstrates the value of international academic engagement in strengthening research capacity and connecting local environmental challenges with global sustainability debates. Her research on e-waste regulation is particularly relevant as Ghana continues to address the environmental and governance implications of electronic waste management and the transition towards a more sustainable, circular economy.

Ms. Larbi expressed appreciation to Villanova University and the Africa Climate Collaborative, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, for funding the travel and accommodation associated with participation in the conference. She expressed appreciation to her supervisors; Prof. Albert Ahenkan and Dr. Ochere-Ankrah, for their guidance and support. The Department of Public Administration continues to encourage research and academic engagement that connect public governance with practical responses to environmental, social and developmental challenges in Ghana and beyond.
