Prof. Albert Ahenkan of UGBS receives Fellowship for Research on European Green Deal and Africa's energy transitions at the Academy of International Affairs, NRW, Bonn, Germany

Prof. Albert Ahenkan, HoD in the Department of Public Administration has been awarded a Fellowship by the Academy of International Affairs in Bonn, Germany, to research the intersection of the EU Green Deal and Africa's energy transitions. Drawing on his expertise in sustainable development, green economy, and climate finance, Prof. Ahenkan's research will explore the potential synergies and challenges between the Green Deal and Africa's efforts to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

The research project aims to shed light on the opportunities and challenges presented by the convergence of the EU Green Deal and Africa's energy transitions, with a focus on renewable energy initiatives and partnership frameworks between the two continents. By examining the role of the Green Deal in driving market innovations, structural transformation, and job creation both in Europe and Africa, the research seeks to inform policymakers and stakeholders on how best to harness the potential of renewable energy for sustainable development.

The EU Green Deal is a comprehensive and ambitious set of policy initiatives by the European Union (EU) to make Europe the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050. It encompasses various strategies and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, promote renewable energy sources, and foster a circular economy.
Additionally, the project examines the convergence of the Green Deal and Africa's energy transitions, focusing on the synthesis of renewable energy initiatives and partnership frameworks between the two continents. The research also discusses the Green Deal as a key component for new markets and innovations, structural change and job creation in Europe and Africa. The research aims to develop a framework to guide African policymakers on the implementation of the Green Deal.

The collaboration between the Academy of International Affairs and the University of Ghana holds the promise of fostering stronger ties between the two institutions and contributing to Ghana's broader efforts towards sustainable development.
