The World’s Top 2% Scientists List is an annual global ranking developed by researchers at Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier. It identifies influential scientists worldwide using standardised citation metrics derived from the Scopus database, one of the major databases of peer-reviewed scholarly literature. The ranking evaluates researchers using two broad measures: career-long research impact and single-year research impact. The career-long category assesses a scientist’s research influence over their professional career, while the single-year category measures their impact within a particular year. The methodology covers 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, providing a framework for comparing researchers across different disciplines. It uses a composite indicator, known as the c-score, which incorporates multiple bibliometric measures, including citations, the h-index, co-authorship adjustments and authorship positions. The methodology also considers citation counts with and without self-citations.
These measures are intended to provide a broader assessment of research influence, considering not only the volume of publications but also the extent to which a researcher's work is cited and their contribution to collaborative research. Scientists qualify for inclusion either by ranking among the top 2% in their respective fields or by being among the 100,000 researchers with the highest composite c-scores globally, subject to the ranking's methodology. The 2026 list comprises a total of 249,310 scientists. Inclusion in the ranking provides international recognition of researchers whose scholarly contributions have influenced their respective fields and contributed to the advancement of knowledge. For UGBS, the recognition of the four faculty members adds to the school’s research profile and draws attention to the scholarly work produced by its faculty within the global academic community. The 2026 ranking also provides an opportunity to recognise the research contributions of the three academics and their standing among scholars in the Economics and Business discipline. The University of Ghana Business School congratulates the four faculty members on this prestigious recognition and wishes them continued success in their research endeavours and future contributions to knowledge creation and academic excellence.
