Average at UGBS: The Silent Struggles You Never Hear About

Average at UGBS: The Silent Struggles You Never Hear About

UGBS Through My Eyes: Lessons Beyond Grades

Walk through the University of Ghana Business School on any normal day, and you will see confidence everywhere.
Walking through the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) is like watching a world in motion. Lectures are happening, assignments are piling up and students are struggling to meet deadlines. Everyone seems to know where they are going… but sometimes, I stop and wonder, do we really know why we are here? Some even laugh like everything is perfectly under control. But beneath all that, there is a silence.

A silence that many students are living in. Because the truth is, not everyone is excelling; not everyone is failing either — most of us are somewhere in between. And that “in-between” is where the real struggle is.
Being an average student at UGBS is one of the most misunderstood experiences; you are not celebrated like the top students, neither are you also noticed like those who are struggling badly. You are just there, trying....

The Pressure Nobody Sees

Every semester comes with expectations. You are expected to 'do better than last time', 'push your GPA higher', and even 'make your parents proud'.
But no one really teaches you how to deal with the pressure when your effort does not match your results. You study, you attend lectures, and you try to stay consistent. Yet sometimes, the grades do not reflect your effort and slowly, doubt starts to grow.
Sometimes, the hardest lessons are not about accounting formulas or economics theories. They are about resilience, patience, and self-belief. These include showing up even when you feel tired, asking questions even when you fear being judged, or supporting classmates even when you are struggling with yourself.
These lessons do not get published online. No one tweets them, but they shape you , and the person you are becoming.
What makes it harder is not even the academics, but rather the thoughts. You keep asking yourself, “Am I really good enough for this course?”, “Why is everyone else getting it faster than me?” or  “Maybe I’m just not smart enough.”
These are questions many UGBS students ask themselves, but very few will admit openly. Because here, everyone wants to appear like they have it all figured out.
But let me be honest, UGBS can be tough. The pressure to perform academically, socially, and personally is real and most of the time, we carry it silently.

What we Actually Need

What we need is not just studying harder alone. We equally need more honest conversations, more support systems, and more understanding that success is not always instant. This is because growth is not always loud. Sometimes it is quiet, looks like small improvements no one notices, and other times, it is just not giving up.

My Advice to Fellow Students

Do not measure your worth by your GPA alone; and do not let fear of failure stop you from learning. Instead, celebrate small wins because every assignment, every presentation, and every question asked in class matters.
And most importantly, take a moment to pause and observe — this journey is as much about who you are becoming, as it is about the degree you earn.
So, to every student quietly fighting, quietly learning, and quietly dreaming, your struggle is valid, your journey is real, and your fire is burning.

Final Thoughts

So, the next time you walk through UGBS and see confidence everywhere…just remember; not everything you see is the full story.
And if you are one of those silently trying, silently improving and silently pushing, this is to tell you that you aren't alone.
