Godfred Matthew Yaw Owusu
Professor Godfred Matthew Yaw Owusu is an Associate Professor of Accounting and the Head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS). His academic career reflects a distinguished record of excellence, leadership, and sustained contribution to higher education and the accounting profession.
Professor Owusu holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting from Putra Business School, Universiti Putra Malaysia; an MPhil in Accounting; and a Bachelor of Science in Administration (Accounting option) from the University of Ghana. His educational background and professional engagements underscore a deep commitment to advancing accounting scholarship, strengthening academic standards, and fostering intellectual rigor.
With over a decade of substantive experience in teaching, research, and consultancy, Professor Owusu has established himself as a leading figure in contemporary accounting discourse. His scholarly output comprises more than 60 peerreviewed publications in reputable international journals, representing significant contributions to areas such as ethics, fraud, tax compliance, behavioural accounting, and sustainability. His research has been presented at numerous prestigious academic conferences worldwide, further reinforcing his status as an influential voice in global accounting scholarship.
Professor Owusu’s research excellence has earned global recognition, including the prestigious Emerald Literati Award for Outstanding Paper (2020), multiple conference bestpaper awards, and international media coverage by outlets such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). These accolades reflect the academic community’s recognition of the relevance, rigour, and impact of his scholarly contributions.
In addition to his research accomplishments, Professor Owusu plays an active role in scholarly publishing and academic quality assurance. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Sustainable Business, PLOS One, the African Journal of Management Research, and the African Journal of Accounting, Banking and Intellectual Capital. His editorial engagements, complemented by extensive manuscript review activities for several respected journals, demonstrate his commitment to advancing the frontiers of knowledge and upholding academic integrity.
His expertise is further sought after across higher education institutions, where he has served as an external assessor and examiner for programmes and academic appointments. Beyond his academic responsibilities, Professor Owusu plays a pivotal role in strengthening the interface between academia and industry. He has provided consultancy services to a wide range of leading organizations, including the Ghana Employers’ Association, BudgiT Ghana, International Budget Partnership, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana (CITG), Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Bloomberg Foundation, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, ECOWAS among others.
