UGBS Department of Accounting Holds a Doctoral Summer Workshop

The Department of Accounting at UGBS successfully held a week-long doctoral summer workshop from Monday, 12th August 2024, to Friday, 16th August 2024 on navigating the future of accounting research, equipping PhD students on how to conduct impactful accounting research. 

Prof.William Coffie, Head of the Department of Accounting welcomed the delegates, including Prof. Alex Dontoh- Professor of Accounting at Stern School of Business, NYU, Prof. Joshua Ronen- Professor of Accounting at Stern School of Business, NYU, and Prof. Hans Christensen- Chookaszian Family Professor of Accounting at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. 

Prof. Ronen introduced the fundamentals of accounting research, covering key theories, and concepts, while Prof. Dontoh also delved into how accounting research has evolved to address and guide policy decisions, noting the shift from managerial performance to providing user-oriented information that maximises social welfare and improves resource allocation. 

On the subsequent day, Prof. Haans led a discussion on corporate sustainability, focusing on the Global South and its critical role in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations. Prof. Haans also provided valuable insights on publishing in top journals and advancing careers in the U.S. as a PhD student. Each of the sessions sparked engaging discussions among students and faculty. At the end of the 5-day seminar, participants' questions were met with thoughtful responses, leaving them better equipped. 

In attendance also were, Prof. Mohammed Amidu, Dr. Teddy Kwakye, Dr. Mawuena Kudjo, Dr. Emerald Edem S. Welbeck, Dr. Emmanuel Asare, all from the Department of Accounting, and other faculty members of the UGBS.
