UGBS and the Department of Economics Introduce the New Bank of Ghana Chair for UG to the Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Department of Economics delegates recently paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, to introduce Prof. Imhotep Y. P. Alagidede, the new Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance and Economics for UG. 

During the meeting, Prof. Justice Nyigmah Bawole, Dean of UGBS, introduced the members present and outlined the purpose of the gathering. Prof. Amfo welcomed Prof. Alagidede and all present, commending his impressive academic profile and achievements that led to his prestigious appointment. She expressed confidence in his ability to make a significant impact and assured him of the University’s support in creating a conducive environment for his work. "It is my hope that we provide a better atmosphere for you to do what you do best," Prof. Amfo stated, emphasising the need for him to be given maximum visibility during his tenure. 

Prof. Alagidede, in his remarks, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and shared his aspirations for his role. He highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between economics and finance to drive development. He expressed commitment to bringing networks and knowledge back to the University of Ghana community to enhance research and academic growth. "Part of my work is to bridge gaps between economics and finance to make each speak to each other for development," he said. He also spoke about the significance of the Bank of Ghana Chair in expanding top-level academic research and supporting student innovation. 

According to Prof. Bawole, Prof. Alagidede has been provided with offices at UGBS and the Department of Economics, alongside a vehicle to support his mobility. Meanwhile, plans are underway to organise an official induction ceremony for him, after his introduction to the Bank of Ghana. The meeting concluded with members extending appreciation and well-wishes to Prof. Alagidede, discussing how their respective departments could benefit from his expertise. 

Prof. Alagidede is a distinguished academic with extensive research and consulting experience in development economics, finance, and international policy analysis. He holds a PhD from Loughborough University and is a Professor of Finance and Economics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

His tenure as the Bank of Ghana Chair will involve conducting research in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana, developing grant proposals, disseminating research findings, teaching and supervising graduate students, and fostering strong links between the UGBS, the Department of Economics, and the financial services industry in Ghana. 

Present at the meeting were Prof. Vera Fiador, Head of the Department of Finance; Prof. Edward Nketiah-Amponsah, Head of the Department of Economics; Mrs. Mavis Osafo Adu, Assistant Registrar (Protocol), Public Affairs Directorate; Ms. Victoria Anim, Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate; and Mr. Yaw Tsen Yeboah, Assistant Registrar (HR), UGBS.
