Stellenbosch University visits UGBS to Explore Opportunities for Potential Collaboration

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) recently hosted representatives from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, to discuss potential collaborations in student exchange programmes and other academic initiatives. The delegation from Stellenbosch University was made up of Prof. Ada Jansen, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Economics, and Ms. Norma Derby from the International Centre for Collaboration in Africa. The meeting, which took place at UGBS, aimed at enhancing bilateral relations, and creating avenues for global learning and collaboration between the two institutions.

Prof. Justice Bawole, Dean of UGBS, welcomed the delegation and provided an overview of how the business school operates, including its commitment to affirmative action and internationalisation. He highlighted UGBS’s existing international relations, the management of international students, and the entrepreneurial opportunities available through the UGBS Innovation and Incubation Hub.

Prof. Bawole also detailed UGBS's academic structure, including the one-year master’s programmes, the specialisation options available to students in their third year, and the opportunities for study abroad and industry visits. He emphasised the school’s commitment to offering international students a strategic and enriching academic experience. Prof. Ada Jansen expressed interest in establishing a student exchange programme and inquired about the international business programmes available at UGBS. She sought information on how international students could integrate into UGBS programmes and complement their studies at Stellenbosch University. She also explored the potential for sustainable exchange programmes that could provide students with opportunities across the African continent.

Ms. Norma Derby mentioned that discussions on establishing a student exchange protocol at Stellenbosch had been ongoing for three years, and she was pleased to be advancing these talks further. Prof. Elikplimi Komla-Abloyor, Coordinator of the UGBS International Relations Office, spoke about the competitive nature of UGBS's undergraduate programmes and the Master of Science international programmes.

They further elaborated on how international students could complete part of their studies at UGBS and then return to Stellenbosch University, ensuring alignment with academic calendars and the transferability of grades between the two institutions. The meeting also touched on course mapping, assessment methods, and the possibility of UGBS offering fully virtual master’s programmes in the future.

Also, present at the meeting were Mr. Emmanuel Poku-Sarkodee, UGBS School Administrator; Ms. Saratu Salifu, Assistant Registrar of General Administration; Ms. Theresa Eshun from the University of Ghana’s International Programmes Office; Ms. Maureen E.
