PROFESSOR LILY YARNEY OF UNIVERSITY OF GHANA BUSINESS SCHOOL (UGBS) IS PROMOTED TO THE ZENITH OF HER ACADEMIC CAREER

The University of Ghana Council, at its meeting held on 16th April 2026, approved the promotion of Prof. Lily Yarney from Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management to Professor (Health Policy and Management) in the Department of Health Services Management, Prof. Yarney, who is currently the Head of Department, holds a PhD, MBA and BSc from University of Ghana, and certificate in Management for International Public Health (MIPH) from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Before joining academia, Prof. Yarney built an extensive career in the development sector, working with three international non-governmental organisations (NGOs). She began her professional journey with World Vision Ghana as HIV/ AIDS Programme Officer. In that role, she led the integration of systematic and continuous HIV and AIDS programming activities into World Vision Ghana’s Area Development Programmes (ADPs) across 21 districts in the country. Prof. Yarney developed the organisation’s HIV and AIDS strategy document, which became central to the implementation of HIV/AIDS programming activities in World Vision Ghana’s activities. Later, she joined Save the Children (UK), also as HIV/AIDS Programme Officer in the Family and Reproductive Health Programme (FRHP) Unit. In this capacity, she coordinated, supervised, monitored and evaluated the work of three national NGOs and over 20 local NGOs implementing HIV/ AIDS and reproductive health interventions across more than 20 districts nationwide until Save the Children UK’s closure of development programmes in Ghana. Prof. Yarney was subsequently appointed Programme Coordinator for the Ghana Conference of Religions for Peace’s Advocacy and Action for Children’s Programme (GCRP’s AACP). She provided leadership in the development, funding and management of the programme, coordinated resource deployment for faith-based organisations’ projects on children, HIV/AIDS and health, and offered technical and monitoring support to the implementing Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs) and partners. She also designed and facilitated training workshops to strengthen capacities of implementing partners of the international NGOs in project management and process improvement.

Prof. Yarney has contributed immensely to academia through teaching, research and service within UGBS, UG and other local and international institutions. She has published several research articles and continues to conduct research in various specialties in Public Health, Social and Behavioural Science and Management. Her promotion to Professor reflects her sustained contributions to academia, research, and public health policy, practice, and management.
