University of Ghana Business School donates to Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims of Mepe
The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Class of the University of Ghana Business School has donated an amount of One Hundred and twenty-eight thousand, six hundred and seventy cedis, 60 pesewas to the flood victims of Mepe in the Volta Region of Ghana. The donation which was spearheaded by Prof. Tweneboah-Koduah, an Associate Professor at the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, and Mr. Deli Dotse Gli, a Doctoral Researcher in the Department included food items, water and soft drinks, stationaries, mosquito nets, Sanitaries, toiletries, detergents, clothes, and footwear. The donation was to relieve persons affected by the recent Akosombo Dam Spillage.
According to Prof. Tweneboah-Koduah, the students were tasked to practicalise what they are learning in school using Mepe as a case, so they mobilised resources from organisations and individuals for the donation exercise. Ms. Saratu Salifu, the Assistant Registrar of General Administration alongside the Acting President of the Business House Junior Common Room (BHJCR), Senanu Tetteh Akakpo, and some officials, staff, and faculty of UGBS, represented the school during the donation exercise.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who was present for the donation exercise expressed gratitude on behalf of the displaced victims. He added that there has not been heavy traffic in terms of donations from the latter part of 2023 even though many people have been displaced and he emphasised the urgency of the situation, with the rainy season approaching causing fear and panic since many of the victims are still living in temporary tents. According to him, 300 people have been relocated already and another accommodation, waiting to be completed for them to move in.
He applauded the students for their compassion and humanitarian spirit, choosing the Mepe community for such an initiative and using their plight as the case study. He also mentioned that the donation will remind people to continue supporting them and the visit is therapeutic to the victims, they will no longer feel neglected. Additionally, Hon. Ablakwa revealed plans in parliament to pass legislation encouraging corporate social responsibility, citing its potential contribution to national development.
The Paramount Queen Mother of Mepe Traditional Area, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV also conveyed heartwarming message to the students, and all involved for the success of the donation exercise. She emphasised the importance of embracing crises and implementing preventive measures. Togbe Korsi Nego VI who is the Manklalo (Paramount King) of the Mepe Traditional Area was also present for the donation exercise.
Furthermore, Hon. Ablakwa led the students and staff from UGBS to witness the ‘North Tongu MP and Partners Safe Alternative Housing Project-Mepe’ consisting of fifty (50) rooms with TV and Storerooms targeting vulnerable groups such as single mothers, children, and the aged.
