New York University (NYU) Stern School of Business visits the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS)
A team from Justworks Global Leadership Fellows at New York University (NYU) Stern School of Business visited the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) as part of its global immersion project. The team included Mr. Isaac Oates, Founder & Executive Chair of Justworks, Prof. Rachel S. Kowal, Faculty Trip Leader from NYU Stern, Mr. Robert Tornu, Trip Coordinator, and some career managers from NYU Stern. They were welcomed by Prof. Justice Bawole, Dean of UGBS.
Prof. Kowal stated that the visit aimed to expose the team to opportunities within small business enterprises in emerging markets like Ghana, reflect on global challenges faced by social entrepreneurs, deepen cultural awareness, and develop a global leadership perspective.
Prof. Bawole provided an overview of the Ghanaian community, economy, and social enterprises. He highlighted the UGBS Innovation and Incubation Hub, where student ideas are nurtured into viable businesses. He also emphasised the business school's collaboration with government institutions and the impact of its alumni across various sectors.
Addressing a question raised, Prof. Bawole expressed concern about skilled students leaving Ghana, potentially depriving the country of essential skills in the future. He also discussed youth development through volunteerism and social services within communities, as well as business opportunities for the youth.
The discussions further included the modes of entry into undergraduate and graduate programmes, partnerships with private and government entrepreneurs and officials addressing challenges faced by businesses. Gender issues were also addressed, emphasising the importance of providing more opportunities for females in education.
Present at the meeting were the heads of the seven departments in the business school, the School Administrator, Mr. Emmanuel Opoku-Sarkodee, Assistant Registrars; Ms. Celestina Marjorie Quist (Academic Affairs, Post Graduate & Special Programmes), Ms. Saratu Salifu (General Administration) and Ms. Catherine Emefa Aziaku (Academic Affairs, Undergraduate & Affiliate Unit).
