The University of Ghana Business School celebrated a historic occasion on Friday, August 16, 2024, as it hosted the official launch of the Health Services Students' Association (HESSA) and the handing over of its newly elected executives. The event, held at the R.S. Amegashie Auditorium, brought together students, faculty, alumni, and distinguished guests to celebrate this significant milestone.
The ceremony began with an opening address from Miss. Mariam Ewunbor Sulemana, the Outgoing General Secretary, who stressed the importance of creating an association dedicated to Health Service Management students. Her speech highlighted the need for a cohesive body that can address the specific challenges the students face, while also representing their interests in academic and professional settings.
The event continued with an introduction of the Chairperson, Prof. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah who delivered an inspiring address. Prof. Abekah-Nkrumah, the Head of the Department of Health Services Management discussed the future direction of the department, sharing insights from his extensive experience and outlining the opportunities ahead for students within the department.
The event was also graced by a special guest speaker, Mr. Allen Seth Anku, Deputy Director of Administration at Ghana Health Service, who delivered a powerful address on the importance of Health Service Administration professionals in shaping the future of healthcare in Ghana. He urged students to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by HESSA, emphasizing that the skills and networks they develop through the association will be essential for their future careers.

A Historic Transition & Successful Launch
A central feature of the event was the handing-over ceremony, where the outgoing executives formally transferred leadership to the newly elected team. The outgoing president, Mr. Benjamin Odei Mensah, reflected on the successes of the previous administration, including the launch of the Craft-Hive initiative, which equipped students with vocational and technical skills, and the historic introduction of a Women’s Commissioner to promote gender equality and empowerment within HESSA. Other achievements worth mentioning include the organization of a free health screening program to promote the wellbeing of HESSA members and the introduction of a HESSA Lacoste, fostering unity and pride.

The incoming president, Mr. Simon Agboyibor, took the stage to deliver an inspiring acceptance speech. He pledged to build on the strong foundation laid by his predecessors and outlined his vision for the future of HESSA, focusing on student engagement, interdisciplinary learning, and strengthening connections with healthcare professionals and organizations.
