William Coffie

William Coffie is a Financial Economist and the Head of Department of Accounting and Full Professor of Accounting & Finance at University of Ghana. He holds a PhD in Financial Economics and Masters Degree in Finance from Birmingham City University, United Kingdom. He has a bachelor degree in Accountancy, Postgraduate Certificate & Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing, Postgraduate Certificate in (Higher) Education, and Certificate in Business & Industrial Administration. Prof Coffie is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Marketer, Chartered Manager and a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants UK.   
Prof Coffie has over 20 years’ experience as a University Lecturer in five Universities and several Colleges across Europe, Asia and Africa. He has been publishing in reputable international journals including International Review of Financial Analysis, Journal of Financial Stability, Global Business & Economics Review, Accounting Research Journal etc.  He has over 60 journal and conference publications and authored 8 textbooks. His research interests lie in Accounting Information, Corporate Finance, Financial Inclusion & livelihood, Capital market, Asset Pricing & Volatility, Modelling economic series, IFRS adoption, Corporate Governance, Auditing and Taxation. His teaching cuts across several business disciplines including Accounting, Corporate Finance, Investment & Portfolio Management, Applied Econometrics, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Strategic Management, Research Methods, Financial Engineering, Taxation, Entrepreneurship and Public Relations/Business Communications. As part of his PhD, Prof Coffie received a scholarship to attend training in Financial Econometrics at Wadham College University of Oxford and in Economic modelling at Clare College University of Cambridge. He is an external thesis supervisor to Namibia University of Science & Technology. He was EU Horizon Scholar to Global Development Institute of University of Manchester from 2022-2024. Prof Coffie was the Principal Investigator for the Capital Market Research for Ghana Stock Exchange from 2017 to 2021.

Professor Coffie is an experienced and astute manager in university administration and management. Besides head of department in one of the biggest departments at University of Ghana, Prof Coffie serves on several important university boards and committees including Academic Board, Business and Executive Committee, Finance and General Purpose Committee, Ghana Universities Staff Superannuation Scheme Committee, Finance and Investment Committees of the Business School, Finance Committee of the University Ghana Accra City Campus and chaired a Subcommittee for SRC Hostel Project. Prof Coffie has been the Project Finance consultant for a number of university projects including UGMC, University of Ghana Hospital, Accra City Campus, SRC Hostel Project and UGBS phase II.  
Prior to working at University of Ghana, Prof Coffie was a Senior Lecturer in Accounting & Finance and Programmes Director for MSc Finance & Accounting and MSc International Banking & Finance at University of Wolverhampton UK for almost 8 years. Besides, prior to his appointment as a Senior Lecturer at University of Wolverhampton, Prof Coffie has previously worked as a Lecturer in Finance at Birmingham City University UK, Lecturer in Business & Taxation at Staffordshire University UK, Lecturer in Accounting at City College Birmingham and Birmingham Metropolitan College. He also taught Marketing & Communication at Kumasi Polytechnic and Advertising & Public Relations at University College of Management Studies. Prof Coffie was a visiting Professor of Corporate Finance at Hong Kong City University from 2008 to 2011 and a visiting Scholar to London Stock Exchange from 2008 to 2014.   
In industry, Prof Coffie worked with Alpha Manna Ltd, Everygoodness MSJ Ltd, Sandwell Metropolitan Council and Royal Mail. He is currently into private Accountancy practice and management consultancy as a hobby. He has consulted extensively for both private and the public sectors including Bauchi State Government in Nigeria, National Union of Local Government Workers in Nigeria, African Development Bank, Ministry of Finance, Institute of Parliamentary Studies Africa, Millenium Development Authority (MiDA) & US Office of Inspector General.  Prof Coffie was a Consultant for Oxfam on Value for Money Analysis on COVID19 Government response programmes. He’s a commodity merchant with enormous experience in the cocoa industry and arbitrage trader in stocks and forex.
