UGBS engages the National Council for Curriculum & Assessment (NaCCA) to Integrate Financial Literacy into School Curricula

A delegation from the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), led by Dr. Benjamin Amoah from the Finance Department and the coordinator of the FA Association (UG) Chapter, convened with the National Council for Curriculum & Assessment (NaCCA) on April 10th, 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to advocate and share ideas on the integration of financial literacy into the revised Basic School curricula.

Present at the meeting was Prof. Edward Appiah, the Director General for NaCCA, Mr. Reginald George Quartey, Ag. Head, Curriculum Development Directorate, Ms. Genevieve Mensah, Principal Curriculum Development Officer, Mr. Mathew Owusu, Deputy Director- Technical Services, Ms. Alice Kuramah, Asst. Corporate Affairs Officer, and Mrs. Afia Dumfe, the UGBS alumina officer.

Highlighting UGBS's commitment to Responsible Management Education, Institution and Community Engagement under its Strategic Plan (Pillar 8), Dr. Amoah emphasised the importance of providing financial literacy among young adults through early education.

On his part, Prof. Appiah elaborated on the process of curriculum development for pre-tertiary education, underscored the relevance and benefits of the proposed integration. He emphasised the involvement of experts in reviewing curricula before dissemination and disclosed that the new curricula which has financial literacy contents will enrich the personal financial decisions of basic school pupils in Ghana.

Mr. Quartey proposed that UGBS develop a stage-specific teaching guide to facilitate integration into the next curriculum revision. Additionally, NaCCA advised UGBS to deliberate with the Complimentary Education Agency (CEA) for further insights on how to incorporate financial literacy in their informal education campaigns.

Following a presentation by Dr. Amoah, NaCCA acknowledged the alignment of UGBS's proposal with ongoing curriculum development efforts to provide comprehensive education in Ghana.
