UGBS and ACCA Strengthen Ties

UGBS and ACCA Strengthen Ties

The Department of Accounting at UGBS is re-affirming and deepening its partnership with ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice. This was discussed at a stakeholder engagement meeting held on 27 January 2026 at the ACCA Head Office.

The meeting brought together senior representatives from both institutions. ACCA was represented by Mr. Norman G. Williams Esq., Head – West & Central Africa; Mr. Gameli Datsomor, Business Development Manager; Mr. Kwaku Anim Boadu, Education Relationship Lead (West & Central Africa Cluster); and Ms. Alberta Darkowa Burndam. The UGBS delegation was led by Prof. Godfred Matthew Yaw Owusu, Head of the Department of Accounting, and included Dr. Rita Amoah Bekoe and Dr. Hadija Nyante.

Reflecting on the engagement, Prof. Owusu noted that the partnership between UGBS and ACCA dates back to 2011 to 2012, a period marked by active collaboration and impactful joint initiatives. The relationship has evolved over time and revitalising it is now a key strategic focus. This aligns with the Department’s three-year vision, which highlights industry relevance, stakeholder collaboration, and graduate employability.

Discussions centered on turning intentions into tangible outcomes, especially by increasing students’ exposure to real-world accounting practice. Among the key proposals was the establishment of a state-of-the-art practical accounting laboratory in the new UGBS building. Designed to seat up to 150 students, the facility will support hybrid learning, simulations, and hands-on professional training.

Both institutions also confirmed their commitment to expanding internship and mentorship opportunities, with deliberate efforts to include students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Plans were explored to engage experienced industry professionals as adjunct faculty, enhancing connections between academic learning and real-world practice.

Looking ahead, the partnership aims to monitor progress through regular monthly focus group sessions, making strategic use of ACCA’s resource centre. ACCA further proposed the introduction of excellence awards to recognise Best Graduating Student in Accounting and outstanding faculty contributions. Other discussions covered student and faculty support schemes, exemption policies, ACCA’s branding and visibility in the department, and innovative communication methods, including upgraded notice boards and digital information systems.

Prof. Owusu used the occasion to invite the ACCA team to participate in a Grantsmanship and Skills Development Training Programme for faculty members and early-career researchers, scheduled for 4 February 2026 at the UGBS Graduate Campus. The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to translate dialogue into concrete action, foster a closer collaboration, and position UGBS Accounting students for stronger academic and professional outcomes.
