UGBS Holds Leadership Training for Staff Members
The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) recently conducted a leadership training session for its staff members. The programme was organised by the UGBS School Administrator, Mr. Emmanuel Poku-Sarkodee, with other departments from the University participating. Dr. Thomas Buabeng of the department of Public Administration led the training, focusing on the various types of subordinates and strategies for dealing with them to promote organisational development.
During the session, Dr. Buabeng clarified the distinction between managers and leaders. He explained that while managers adhere to routines to achieve targets, leaders are visionary individuals who make extra achievements. He emphasised that leadership styles should be situationally determined across all departments or offices.
Participants were encouraged to identify and understand their subordinates' needs to produce effective results. Exposing participants to the special skills of leadership, Dr. Buabeng highlighted conceptual, human, and technical skills, as well as communication, teaching, coaching, and counselling abilities. He stressed the importance of effective leadership, which involves getting others to cooperate, delegating responsibilities, and ensuring assignments are fully understood.
Dr. Buabeng further discussed the role of culture as a secret to effective leadership, urging participants to recognise the uniqueness of human mental programming and distinguish between human nature and individual characteristics to avoid prejudices and stereotypes.
Taking his turn, the School Administrator, Mr. Emmanuel Poku-Sarkodee, addressed the importance of recruiting competent workers and expressed gratitude to all participants for their engagement in the training. The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer segment, allowing attendees to delve deeper into the topics discussed.
