Emmanuel Awuni Kolog

Prof. Emmanuel Awuni Kolog is an Associate Professor with a strong background in Computer Science, Data Science, and Informations Systems. He holds a PhD and MSc in Computer Science from the University of Eastern Finland, where he received full scholarship (salaried position) as one of the top applicants for both degrees. Additionally, he holds an MBA in International Business Management from Lapland University of Applied Sciences in Finland and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Ghana. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Information Technology with First Class honors. Prior to joining the OMIS Department, Prof. Awuni worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Eastern Finland, conducting research and supervising graduate-level students. He then held a 3-year early career research position at McGill University in Canada as a Queen Elizabeth II scholar, further solidifying his expertise in the field. He is also an adjunct research fellow at the University of Turku's plugin campus at the University of Namibia. 

In addition to his academic pursuits, Prof. Awuni has leveraged his expertise through global consulting engagements, providing capacity building, data analytics, and IT services and products to esteemed organizations such as the World Bank, Bank of Ghana, UNICEF-Ghana, UNESCO, Pharmacy Council, University College Cork (Ireland), USAID/DAI Policy Link, the Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture (SRID), Ghana Revenue Authority, National Communications Authority (NCA), National Youth Authority of Ghana, and Eduix OY in Finland, among others. Notably, he served as the Lead Senior IT Consultant for the World Bank’s GhAAP project in Ghana. He also held a year-long senior consulting role (on a part-time contract) with the Ghana Revenue Authority in 2023/24, where he was responsible for reviewing and making recommendations for IT-related contracts. Prof. Awuni has developed strong skills in grant proposal writing and has successfully secured several research grants. He is currently leading an EU Erasmus+ project at the University of Ghana in partnership with four other universities worldwide. His research interests are multifaceted, spanning AI and Machine Learning, text-based affect detection using NLP, digital platforms, learning analytics, and business analytics. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (Malawi), the International University of Management (Namibia), and the University of Eastern Finland, where he supervises and co-supervises PhD students.

Recognizing his achievements in applying AI/ML across various disciplines, the University of Ghana Business School honored him with the Best Innovative Worker and Resource Mobilization Award for the 2023/24 academic year. In 2018, he received the Best Research Paper Award at a conference in Hong Kong, and in 2019, one of his papers was nominated (alongside two others) for the Best Paper Award at the Knowledge Management and Information Systems Conference in Vienna. Although he and his co-authors did not win, he was recognized for his pioneering research in ontology and machine learning for the retrieval and archiving of traditional herbal medicine. To date, Prof. Awuni has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers spanning the intersections of Machine learning and IT with health, education, agriculture, and business.
