UGBS OMIS Department Holds Orientation for Business Analytics Students

The Department of Operations and Management Information System (OMIS) of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) on 15th November 2024 held an orientation at R.S Amegashie Hall for the first cohort of BSc. Administration students specialising in Business Analytics. This was to familiarise students with the programme curriculum and opportunities. 

Prof. Anthony Afful-Dadzie, Head, Department of OMIS welcomed the students and provided an overview of the OMIS department and its faculty stating that it is the technical arm of UGBS. He assured students that they will gain practical and real-world experience upon completion of the programme. 

Prof. Emmanuel Awuni, UGBS Programme Coordinator for MSc. Business Analytics provided insights into the programme with an overview of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) has evolved alongside Machine Learning and Deep Learning which are integral to Business Analytics. He emphasised the significance of data analytics and encouraged students to build a strong foundation in statistics. Prof. Awuni urged the students to develop proficiency in programming languages and tools, practice real-world projects, cultivate essential soft skills and aspire to be successful data analysts or scientists. He also announced that the department will be partnering with Google to offer professional certifications to enhance students' career prospects. 

Prof. Eric Afful-Dadzie, OMIS, addressed fears about pursuing business analytics and reassured students that they shouldn’t be intimidated by the field. Prof. Afful-Dadzie noted that they would receive adequate training in industry-standard tools which will prepare them for the global job market. He acknowledged that data science skills are in high demand across various sectors. He also mentioned that the university is partnering with other institutions to provide internship opportunities for its students. 

Dr. Owusu Acheampong, Senior Lecturer, UGBS, concluded the orientation on managing academic and examination stress. He reminded students that taking care of themselves is crucial, emphasising the importance of staying organised, exercising regularly, eating well, and developing good study habits. Dr. Acheampong encouraged students to take advantage of the university’s e-library resources and seek support when needed.
