Prof. Mohammed Amidu wins AXA Research Fund for COVID-19 Research

Professor Mohammed Amidu of the Department of Accounting at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) recently won an award from AXA Research Fund. The fund, which is aimed at awarding 10 new projects, comes with a commitment of EUR 250 million for the projects. This fund is to support scientific research around the world, since its inception in 2008, it has provided EUR 13 million specifically dedicated to infectious disease and pandemic research. Prof. Amidu was selected among 513 applications from top-tier universities in 57 countries by a scientific board.

Prof. Amidu will investigate the impact of global pandemics on vulnerable populations in Ghana and elsewhere and attempt to identify the most effective means of improving their social and economic well-being during and after the pandemic. He also mentioned that his project aims to make a significant contribution to the global pandemic preparedness and migration strategies designed to project high valuable populations in developing countries from the extreme adverse effects of a global pandemic such as COVID-19.

To date, AXA has supported over 650 academic projects, led by top-tier scientists of 60 nationalities in 300 leading academic institutions in 36 countries.
