The Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship at the University of Ghana is developing a rich tradition of graduating PhDs and thereby feeding the PhD Marketing talent pipeline on the continent of Africa. Starting in the year 2014, the first supervised PhD student to be graduated from the Department was Dr. Mahmoud Abdullai Mahmoud, who is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Dr. Mahmoud was supervised by Professor Robert E. Hinson (the Head of Department) and Professor Charles Blankson; Professor of Marketing at the University of North Texas Business School, in Denton, Texas.
The total number of students who have passed their viva since Dr. Mahmoud’s graduation in 2014, are fourteen with the last graduand passing her viva in May, 2019.

It is important to note that in an excellent pursuit of succession planning, PhD graduates like Dr. Mahmoud Abdullai Mahmoud have already developed their scholarship to the level where they have also successfully supervised other PhD students to completion.
Additionally, the PhD graduates from the Department have not only served as raw material for developing the human capital base in the Department, but also for Universities like the Methodist University College, Zenith University College, University of Professional studies, Accra; and also for foreign universities like the China Europe International Business School. MPhil holders from the Department have also worked in Universities like the Ghana Telecom University College, Tamale Technical University; to name a few.
One of the prolific PhD holders from the Department also starts as a Senior Lecturer in the WITS Business School, starting 1st August, 2019. WITS University was ranked number two in Africa in 2019 Times Higher Education Ranking of African Universities. PhD holders from the Department have also published in particularly high ranked journals in Marketing and Business, with scholarships from the Department appearing in journals like the Journal of Business Research, International Marketing Review, Technology, Forecasting and Social Change, Computers in Human Behaviour, as well as the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. Judging from the Universities listed on the 2019 Times Higher Education Ranking of African Universities, the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship at the University of Ghana Business School, easily stands out as the Marketing Department with the most prolific scholarship (judging by the publications in top Association of Business School UK journal rankings) amongst Marketing Departments domiciled in top African Universities.
Drawing on a rich assemblage of local and international faculty, the Department stands poised to produce more doctoral students in marketing in the coming years.
