UGBS Alumnus for the Month of May 2019


Dr Joseph Mensah Onumah is a graduate of the University of Ghana Business School (formerly School of Administration) where he studied for the BSc (Admin) Accounting Option and MBA Accounting Degrees.

Dr Onumah was one of the pioneers who initiated the formation of the UGBS Alumni Association

He started his Academic career in 1982 when he did his National Service at the then School of Administration as a Teaching Assistant.  He was employed later as a Graduate Assistant at the School when he was studying for his MBA degree.  At that time, he took other academic assignments as examiner in business subjects for the West African Examinations Council; examining in Financial and cost accounting, business methods and commerce at both the ordinary and advanced levels of the former GCE and School Certificate Examinations. 

He was a Commonwealth Scholar at the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where he enrolled on the Master of Social Science programme. After the first year, he was recommended to move on to the PhD (Accounting & Finance) programme, graduating in December 1995.  His thesis was on “The Institutional Framework of Central Government Planning and Budgeting in Ghana.

He was a panel member of the Accounting Panel of the National Accreditation Board (NAB), having done a lot of accreditation assignments for the NAB in the then polytechnics and other University Colleges.

He examined for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana (ICAG) and was part of a consortium that undertook one of the earlier reviews of the curriculum of the ICAG.  He was an external examiner for the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX), the Certificate and Diploma-Awarding Authority for the then Polytechnics, and moderated Cost Accounting and Business Finance papers for Polytechnics in the Country.  He was an External Examiner in Accounting and Finance for the School of Business at the University of Cape Coast, the Department of Accounting Studies of the College of Technology Education (Kumasi Campus) of the University of Education, Winneba and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) at Greenhill, Achimota. He was also an External Examiner for the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) at the University of Sierra Leone, Freetown. 

Dr Joseph Mensah Onumah is currently a retired Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School. 

His Academic, Research and Consulting interests are in Financial Accounting, Accounting Curriculum Development, Corporate Governance and Financial Management and Accounting Issues in both Private and Public Sector Institutions.

Dr. Onumah is married to Mrs Regina Mensah Onumah, a Lecturer at GIMPA and together they have four children.
