Biography: 

Dr Adom adopts a passionate research-led approach to his teaching at the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship. He has strong background in the design and management of project, research and analytical skills. He also has an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research techniques as well as a strong underpinning in research philosophies. Dr. Adom is owner and senior Consultant of Entrepreneur’s Clinique; a business and Management Consulting firm. He is an expert in Starting a business and Managing Business Growth. His international exposure across United Kingdom, Europe and North America especially Canada has granted him more knowledge and experience in terms of dealing with global corporate and entrepreneurship issues. He is an Associate Member of Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM, UK) and a member of National Black MBA Association Inc., Chicago – USA

Research

Research : 

My research interests draw on experiences from Africa, specifically Ghana, to inform theoretical developments in entrepreneurship dynamics, motives of informal workers and the relationship between formal and the informal economy, formalization of informal entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, gender and cultural issues in entrepreneurship, environmental factors and sustainable socioeconomic development. These interests lie at the union of a variety of disciplines including anthropology, business/management, economics, development planning, philosophy and sociology. I situated my work in Africa for the reason that the continent offers interesting prospects for theory development in informal economy entrepreneurship research and other thematic areas highlighted. The continent’s economic conditions, colonial history, traditional beliefs and its late embrace of capitalist ideologies suggest that the texture of entrepreneurship in Africa would be distinctive from what pertains in the West. The African context, therefore, allows opportunity for developing new theories and challenging some of the existing ones. In this context, I have carried out several research projects on entrepreneurship in Ghana. I hope to challenge some of the taken-for-granted theoretical perspectives regarding informal work and the motives of entrepreneurship in Africa and the developing world as a whole.

My teaching career at University of Ghana Business School started at the beginning of the 2012/2013 academic year. Since then I have been teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of entrepreneurship and marketing. I have also during this period supervised MBA Long Essay and MPhil/PhD Dissertations.

 

Teaching Philosophy

 

I consider University teaching is certainly a privileged position—a position that I treasure with a deep sense of modesty and respect for all my students, colleagues, and staff. The principal task of a University Lecturer/Instructor is to motivate and encourage students in their academic pursuits. I encourage students to check with original and paradigmatic texts whenever necessary. In doing this, I seek a sustainable balance between students’ competence in lecture notes and textbook materials on the one hand, and on-the-spot creativity, initiative, and critical thinking, on the other. I learned early in my teaching career that students are motivated when relevant materials are delivered to them in a systematic, coherent, and succinct way and on time. As a consequence, I use a range of methods to ensure effective delivery of my subject matter. The outcome is that, my teaching philosophy is implanted in intellectual rigour, with a strong conviction to the development of critical thinking skills and initiative among students, in the spirit of fairness and equal opportunity.
