As part of their Guest Lecture Series for the semester, the Principles of Healthcare Quality Assurance (PHQA) class hosted Dr. Adwoa Agyemang–Benneh, Senior Manager at the Quality Assurance Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The Department of Public Administration and Health Services Management (PAHSM) held this session on the 7th of November 2019 for their final year students at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) Graduate Campus.
Dr. Agyemang–Benneh introduced the session by defining quality assurance as “the starting point for a country’s quality journey and the regulatory approach to ensure that quality remains at or above baseline expectations”. She mentioned that quality assurance is aimed at discouraging fraud & abuse, promoting provision of quality healthcare and ensuring sustainability of NHIS and stakeholders.
The guest speaker expanded on how credentialing protects health service consumers, stimulates quality improvement and grows public confidence in the health system. She added that credentialing under the NHIS is an authorisation given to facilities to provide specified services to NHIS members after assessment and to ensure that they meet pre-determined standards specified in the NHIA.
Dr. Agyemang–Benneh concluded with the client-related, provider-related and state-related challenges of NHIA, as well as an interactive Q&A session where the students engaged her on a variety of issues.
