In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the thirteenth edition of the Distinguished Marketing Practitioner Seminar Series, organised by the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), was held via ZOOM on the 2nd of February 2021. The special guest speaker for this online seminar was the Founder and Executive Director of DAASCO Group of Companies, Dr. Dasmon Alex Akpabli, who presented on the theme “Succeeding Against Odds: Entrepreneurial Tips for a Challenging Pandemic”.
Dr. Dasmon Alex Akpabli began the seminar by thanking all participants for their active involvements in the online series. In his speech, he quoted from Napoleon Hill by remarking that “every adversity, every failure, every heartbreak carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit”. He stated that entrepreneurship is an everyday practice which is knowledge based. The entrepreneurship theory sees changes as normal and effective because it creates opportunities to bring out something new and different. He further continued the presentation by sharing his life’s journey with participants which he termed as “Succeeding Against Odds”. In his narration, he intimated that, before he first established his business in May 1986, he was robbed of all he worked for on December 1985. Yet, he did not give up, but pulled himself up and worked harder. He advised participants that tough times never last but tough people do.
Dr. Akpali stressed on the fact that though the COVID-19 pandemic has carried with itself a lot of adversities. However, these adversities have created an opportunity for change, which includes a new way of virtual communication. He indicated that the best way for entrepreneurs to succeed during this time is to be innovative, proactive and opportunity-driven. “Entrepreneurs must take calculated risks as well as network with others”, he added
The presentation ended with question and answer sessions. The event was moderated by Professor Robert Ebo Hinson, the Head of Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
