Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Broadcast Journalist and Chief Executive Officer of Kaya Tours, has encouraged students of University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) to recognise the tourism sector as a viable business venture. He said this at a lecture in Tourism Marketing for L400 and MBA students of the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
Speaking on the theme “Destination Management”, Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, a.k.a “Abeiku Santana” noted that destination management is an important part of controlling tourism's environmental impacts. According to him, destination management includes land use planning, business permits, environmental regulations, and a host of other practices that shape the development operations of destination management activities.
Mr. Aggrey further made comparative and competitive analysis between destinations such as Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Sao Tome, noting that tourists’ needs and expectations vary greatly from one destination to the next. He also observed that there is no universally accepted approach to destination management. He mentioned that tourism is now a major foreign exchange earner for many countries, and encouraged interested students to consider destination management as a profession after school.
The host, Dr. Kobby Mensah, noted that the lecture was to enable students appreciate and build practical competencies from a practitioner’s perspective. He encouraged the students to recognise destination management as crucial part of a successful tourism marketing campaign.
